Preview: Patty Griffin @ The Birchmere, 7/12 + 7/13/24

Iconic singer-songwriter Patty Griffin makes her return to the DMV with two nights at The Birchmere: Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13.

Emerging from the vibrant ’90s folk scene in Boston, Griffin made an instant splash with her spare debut, Living with Ghosts, in 1996. A favorite of critics and fellow artists, Griffin won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Gospel Album in 2010 (for Downtown Church) and for Best Folk Album in 2019 (for her self-titled LP).

In 2022, Griffin shared TAPE, a collection of rare demos and home recordings hailed by No Depression as “a thoughtful collection of found objects…Griffin’s fans will be quite glad to have these songs in any form for the light they shine on her brilliance.”

Watch the official lyric video for “Get Lucky” by Patty Griffin on YouTube:

Her songs, which explore themes of men and women, love, faith, and working-class life with profound empathy, have been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jessica Simpson, Martina McBride, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Willie Nelson, Solomon Burke, Miranda Lambert, and many others.

As much as she’s beloved as a songwriter, Griffin is equally admired for her deeply emotional singing. It would take a heart of stone not to be moved by it. These two nights are sure to be deeply affecting and beautiful, and they are a must for any fan of folk music or singer-songwriters. As an added bonus, Lucy Wainwright Roche will be opening the show on both nights.

Catch An Evening with Patty Griffin, featuring Patty and her guitarist David Pulkingham, at The Birchmere! Both shows welcome Lucy Wainwright Roche to open!
