Pittsburgh Playwrights and New Horizon Companies Slated for 2024 International Black Theatre Festival

Two productions that originated on Pittsburgh stages in the past year are headed to the International Black Theatre Festival this summer.

Headed to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the 18th biennial festival are Mark Clayton SouthersThe Bluegrass Mile, which debuted at his Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company in October 2023, and the biomusical Blues Is the Roots: The Willie Dixon Story, a February 2024 production of the New Horizon Theater, Inc., written by Charles Dumas.

The International Black Theatre Festival, a program of North Carolina Black Rep, runs July 29-August 3, 2024, and features a selection of 120 new works, world premieres and Black classics, performed over six days by national and international professional Black theater companies at venues throughout Winston-Salem.
