Live Review: Cannons @ Rams Head Live! — 4/4/24

“We’ve been a band for 10 several years now,” Michelle Joy, singer for the LA-dependent band Cannons, just lately explained to the packed crowd at Rams Head Dwell! “It’s the most exciting I have ever experienced.” And that enjoyable seriously showed not only on the phase but in the crowd.

With the release of their most current album, Heartbeat Highway, in November of past year Cannons have created a overall body of operate that showcases the brilliant pop tune craft of the trio of Joy, Ryan Clapham on guitar, and Paul Davis on bass. Buoyed initially by the strike, “Fire for You,” just after getting showcased in the Netflix collection Under no circumstances Have I Ever, Cannons ongoing pumping out these dance-hefty hits with 2022’s Fever Desire.

Each subsequent file that Cannons have produced builds on the subsequent. They develop the kind of new music that would be excellent on a late-night trip. A regular defeat hiding a bit of melancholy, but not way too considerably. Even nevertheless Heartbeat Freeway has far more of a &#821770s / Studio 54 truly feel to it, Cannons retains that perception of pleasure with a tinge of unhappiness.

Opening the night on April 4 was Dallas singer-songwriter, Juliana Madrid. I hadn’t read Madrid prior to, but her brand name of infectious pop had me examining out the handful of EPs that she’s produced to date.

As the lights went down to mark the start of Cannons set, the digital defeat that followed experienced every person clapping along as every single member of the band took the phase. Pleasure, getting heart stage commenced on the laidback title observe Heartbeat Freeway. A mix of dance pop and, dare I say, a little state flare, “Heartbeat Highway” had this crowd groovin’.

Despite the fact that, according to Joy, this was Cannons initial time enjoying Baltimore, they took more than like they owned the position. And although most of the aim of the set was on the more recent album, there were being some fan favorites like “Talk Talk” (which has grow to be a single of my favorites), “Bad Dream” and the aforementioned smash, “Fire for You.”

Enjoy the official songs video clip for “Sweeter” by Cannons on YouTube:

I have to say, Cannons has that fantastic mixture of type and chops, Clapham’s guitar tone was as smooth as melting butter above leading of the bouncing bass and drums from Davis and drummer Ben Hilzinger (who also plays with option rockers Eve 6). And as Joy danced along the stage, she achieved out to the crowd who just ate it up.

Speaking of the crowd reaction, Cannons is 1 of all those bands wherever viewers participation is a large aspect of the exhibit. From clapping together, singing together with the chorus of “Crush” or shouting “fuck you” in the chorus of “Ruthless,” (a track that Pleasure said “needed to be mentioned at the time” of the song’s composing), this was a palms-on present.

Cannons finished their most important set with the strike, “Fire for You,” right before coming again to the stage to encore with “Desire” and “Evening Star.”

With the commence of their North American tour in Baltimore, Cannons carry on by way of the Summertime, and it’s not a single to slumber on!
