Kinetic Theatre in 2024: A Mamet Double Take and a Sherlock Holmes Christmas

Andrew Paul’s Kinetic Theatre returns to Pittsburgh with a mini-Mamet Festival, plus a holiday show that marks the return of David Whalen as Sherlock Holmes.

Whalen, who recently completed a rep company marathon of the Shakespeare History Plays at the Guthrie Theater, also reunites with director Paul for a revival of the 1992 drama Oleanna, one half of a “A Pair of Deuces: A Celebration of the Plays of David Mamet.”

The season opens June 13 with Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre, starring Sam Tsoutsouvas and Joseph McGranaghan. The play focuses on two actors in a classical repertory company, inspired by British theater in the 1970s: veteran actor Robert, and John, experiencing the first flush of success.

The cast of Oleanna, which opens in July, includes Mei Lu Barnum and Tsoutsouvas. In December, Whalen will take on the Holmes’ mantle in Mark Shanahan’s A Sherlock Carol, an award-winning mash-up of Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle.

Paul, who directs all three productions in 2024, previously created single-playwright festivals devoted to Beckett, Pinter, Synge and Chekhov, with repertory companies at Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre.

Mamet is a prolific writer for stage, screen and pages who earned the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross. His American Buffalo was seen earlier this year, with Whalen joining Patrick Jordan at barebones productions. In December 2023, the playwright released an unabashed portrait of his time as a screenwriter, titled Everywhere an Oink Oink: An Embittered, Dyspeptic, and Accurate Report of Forty Years in Hollywood.
